Fly fishing and fishing have always been a passion of mine it's about as big passion I have for Ridingwithkurt.com. I get asked a lot about some of my favorite places to go experience trout, beautiful scenery, and an experience like no other. My answer is Montana. Here is one of my favorite spots I have recommended to others and treasure it deeply. The experience is amazing, and the reward is unbelievable in these spots, especially if you're into fly-fishing or fishing, and landing a trout in this spot will leave you breathless.
The East Rose Bud in Custer National Forrest. This is a small river/ creek that runs from Fossil Lake and runs north. The views are amazing, and the fishing is phenomenal. The area offers 20 miles of scenic views with several stops to cast your line. For me, I would park my car by the lake and hike north along the river. You can find several pools of water with areas around boulders and areas you can look at for casting in. There was plenty of success with Elk Hair Caddis, Prince Nymphs, and Scuds when I fished the area. I also at the time kept this area quiet and never took any of my friends. I would spend my weekend on this river taking in the beauty of the mountains and the river itself. Additionally, rods using a 4 or 5 weight would be enough. You could even go lighter. The best time of year is summer. Additionally, the best time of year is May through September. May be a little hard because of the runoff with the melt, but by June, the river was amazing. The melt off had passed, and the river was prime for enjoyment. Also, take a few cast into lake itself. This is a small stream, but with challenging terrain. Have sturdy boots, waders, or a good set of footwear for the experience.
For stays, look at Red Lodge or Billings. You can also fly into Billings. Plenty of restaurants are there as well, including Montana Brewing Company and Tiny's. This part of Montana is breathtaking and will offer you an amazing experience. It's a river that provided me with so many memories, and I hope you have the same amazing experiences as I did.
