Bonne Terre Mines Bonne Terre, Missouri

As a child, I would visit my grandfather in Flat River,  Missouri.  Today, it's known as Park Hills , Missouri.  As a kid, when my mom took us to Flat River, we would experience a small town Midwest America lifestyle.  Waking up to the smell of bacon that my grandfather was a perfectionist at cooking bacon and biscuits in his home. Also, over breakfast, he would share his stories about life and memories about work.  My grandfather worked for Bonne Terre Mines in the accounting department.  I would visit the historic mine as a kid, and a few years ago, I took my own kids there to experience this historic mine located in southeastern Missouri.

The Bonne Terre Mine was created by the St. Joe Lead Company in 1862. It was an active mine from 1862 to 1963. After 1963, the mine would be filled with water and then become now the largest subterranean lakes. Today, you can visit the mine that offers a variety of packages. They offer a tour, which includes a walking tour and boat ride throughout the underground lake. Additionally,  to get a true underwater experience, you can scuba dive with 20 various underwater trails that offer visibility at 100 feet.

The mine is located about an hour south of St. Louis, Missouri.  For stays, look at St. Louis,  Missouri at the Union Station Hotel.  It's an amazing hotel with plenty of activities nearby.  The Bonne Terre Mine is a true American experience where you learn about those who formed America with the mining industry to see a natural beauty that the subterranean world has to offer.  This is definitely a spot to add when passing through southeastern Missouri.  #ridingwithkurt
