Fly Fishing Out West

When I was a kid growing up in Nashville, I would always enjoy fishing. I would ride my bike down to The Little Harpeth with my rod or fly rod in hand. Over time, when I began driving, I would expand my fishing to The Harpeth, South Harpeth, Carey Fork, Elk River, and The Duck River. After high school, I headed west to Montana.
Fly-fishing is an art it requires patience, timing, and understanding the waters as well as occasional luck. There are so many places for fly-fishing and fishing that have been recommended to me by post-it. Part of this journey on my quest to see all seven continents by Post-it Notes occurred last year when I returned to Montana. The experience was incredible spending my time with the guide services from Montana Troutfitters. The day on the Yellowstone River was one that took me back to my life in Montana years ago.
My dream of travel also began with Fly-fishing when I headed to Idaho Falls, Idaho, to visit a friend for his wedding about two and a half years ago. Fly-fishing on the South Fork of the Snake River was a return to tranquility. It was my return to my happy place and finding peace in my life. I spent two days on the river catching trout and experiencing a beauty that I had almost forgotten existed. The friends I gained in Idaho Falls recommended Jimmy's Fly Shop, which hooked me up with the flies needed for fishing on the South Fork. Both Brown Trout and Rainbow trout were caught on both nymph and dry fly.
There are also some amazing fly-fishing stops throughout Montana that I have always enjoyed. Generally, I used a five weight Reddington rod with a Battenkill Reel by Orvis. Also, I have a six weight Reddington Rod that is great for heavier rivers like the Yellowstone, Bighorn, and South Fork River.
I have so many places throughout the world that I look forward to traveling to for fishing and fly-fishing that have been recommended to me by post-it notes. Areas in South America, New Zealand, Australia, and North America are destinations I have for fishing. If you're looking for fishing or fly-fishing travel in 2025, then add Montana or Idaho as amazing places for fishing. #ridingwithkurt
