Interstate 40 stretches from Barstow, CA to Wilmington, NC, which is over 2400 miles. I have experienced the majority of this stretch of the United States and the immense beauty it has to offer. There is one stretch, though, that is must add with great stops that were recommended to me by post-it notes. The stretch from Las Vegas, NV to Santa Fe, NM is a stretch with history, natural beauty, and even some amazing parks.
From Las Vegas, you'll first want to stop at the Hoover Dam. This natural wonder is the second largest dam in the United States. It offers a museum, tour , and areas where you can walk and drive across the dam. The dam is located along Highway 93 about forty-five minutes east of Las Vegas.
The next stop is just past the Arizona border, and it's your literally your last stop for gas before you hit Interstate 40 on Highway 93. The Last Stop is a little bit of a tourist stops but last stop to ger gas before you journey to Flagstaff. You can pick up snacks, drinks, and food at this stop and gear up for the long drive ahead.
The third stop is one for an incredible Southwestern dining experience in Flagstaff. Mart Anne's offers some fantastic Tex Mex and Southwestern cuisine. The Carne Asada is a must and offers tremendous flavor. Appetizers, burritos, tacos, and other delicious items are available.
The fourth and fifth stops are Meteor Crater National Landmark and Petrified Forest National Park. Both are worth making the stop, and both offer a unique geographic exploration of how the area has changed over time.
The final stop is in New Mexico with one dining spot and one that is mind-blowing for those who are fascinated with history. If you want to get your fix on Hatch Green Chili, then a stop at Garcia's in Albuquerque is worth it. The other is Petroglyph National Monument. This area offers incredible rock mounds that have etchings from native Americans that are over 400 years old.
You'll not be disappointed by this stretch of Interstate 40. The drive is about 637 miles and takes about ten hours. If you're a road trip fan, then this is one to add along Interstate 40 from Nevada to New Mexico. #ridingwithkurt
