Jackson and Vicksburg, MS

Jackson, MS is the Capitol and offers a quick getaway for a long weekend. The city offers a variety of historical places to see and several local dining experiences that are worth the trip.

Three stops that are a definite in Jackson consist of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum.

For a great dining experience head to Shaggy's on the Rez. Located on the Ross Reservoir the views and the menu will leave you with a wonderful dining experience. The starters that I recommend are the Corn and Crab Bisque and the Fried pickles. Entree items that a go to are the Shrimp Tacos, Shrimp Platter, Shrimp and Grits, and the Shaggy's Snapper.

Another dining experience is the Iron Horse Grill. The restaurant is located in downtown Jackson and offers menu items including Fajitas, stuffed Delta Catfish, Grilled Redfish, and classic Steaks.

A final step is the historic town of Vicksburg. Vicksburg is a city in western Mississippi. It’s known as the site of a key Civil War battle. The Siege of Vicksburg is commemorated at the vast Vicksburg National Military Park, which encompasses the Vicksburg National Cemetery and the restored USS Cairo gunboat. The landmark Old Court House has a museum displaying Civil War artifacts. Thus is a must stop. The self guided tour is amazing and gives you a idea how large this battle was during the Civil War.

For dining head to Key City Brewery and Eatery. The restaurant located in downtown Vicksburg had amazing pizza and craft beers. The restaurant is located in a historic area and you won't leave disappointed with this great local Mississippi establishment.

Both Jackson and Vicksburg offer plenty to see and do and are a hidden gem for seeing history and dining experiences.
