McEwen's Oxford, MS

Oxford, MS, is a part of the South I have always enjoyed traveling to. The quaint atmosphere of downtown with the square to the University of Mississippi plus an incredible food scene. Over a year ago, I began traveling to Oxford and immediately became a fan. Some time ago, a rider who attended the University of Mississippi told me about one of their dining experiences in the heart of Oxford, MS. Tonight, I stopped by their favorite dining experience to take in the flavors of McEwen's. McEwewen's a mix of Southern flair, with French cuisine. The menu varies with appetizers, gumbo, salads, and a very wide variety of entree dishes. For the first course, I had their Duck Gumbo. The Gumbo had shredded duck, Andoulli sausage, holy trinity, okra, in a tasty broth Flavored with roux and spices. The Gumbo had incredible flavor and paired well with Clos Du Bois Chardonnay. For the second course, I had their Iceberg Wedge that was topped with housemade blue cheese dressing, bacon, blistered cherry tomatoes, balsamic glaze, and croutons. This was an excellent Wedge Salad that was not overly heavy on the blue cheese but let the flavors of the salad and dressing speak for themselves. For the entree, I went with the Seared Duck Breast served over sweet potato mash, topped with pickled fennel and orange slaw, and served with a hot honey. Duck is one of my favorites, and they nailed it with the doneness, seasoning, crispy skin, and over all flavors of the entire dish. The hot honey added a great balance with all the flavors. For wine pairing, I paired it with an Italian Pinot Grigio Maso Canali. The dryness and florals of the pinot grigio balanced well with the duck and the flavors of the dish. The restaurant offers an extensive wine and drink menu plus an incredible ambiance. Highly recommend this dining experience when visiting Oxford, MS.
