Many individuals often think of Northern CA as San Francisco and Sacramento but it is a different area for me I consider it as the area that sits just below Oregon an area of vast beauty, gorgeous mountains, beautiful rivers, breath taking views of an area that still remains untouched, plenty of outdoor experiences.
The cities that are a must stop for this region of California consist of Yreka, Shasta, Redding, Weed, and Etna. All are small towns and offer diverse communities that provide some of the best outdoor experiences in California. Outdoor experiences include hiking, climbing, skiing, fishing, white water rafting and camping.
To put your true outdoor experience to the test head to Mount Shasta. Located just 50 miles south of the Oregon border. The mountain itself rises from the area and has an altitude of over 14,000 feet. The climb to the top will take at least 2 to 3 days with multiple stops setting up camps along your trek to the summit. You will need to be in top shape to experience this climb as you can experience exhaustion, altitude sickness and dehydration. Highly recommend using the local guide services to get to the summit. When I submitted in 1994 it took 3 days. Camping at the base the first night. Hiking to Shasta Lake the second day. Then waking up at 4 am to begin the trek to the summit. For the summit climb you'll need all the equipment from winter gear to crampons for the snow and ice to a determination that you can only put one foot in front of the other to keep going. For a true white water experience head to the Klamath River. The river offers various grades of classes for those wanting the simple class 2 and 3 to the extreme of class 4. The river has a beauty that one will never forget as you experience the beauty of Northern. CA. For guide services for the river turn to Iron head Rafting or Adventure Whitewater.
