Eight years ago, I moved back to the Nashville area from Charleston, SC. Charleston is one of those parts of the country that I get asked about often as a place to visit. The city is amazing, the food is incredible, and history is a major part of the beginnings of America. During my time in Charleston, I was a culinary instructor teaching those who were aspiring to become a chef. My specialty was American Cuisine. How little did I know at the time this was the direction my life would be taking me. We would indulge in American history and discuss the variety of cuisines in America, but we would always indulge in Charleston, SC.
Charleston lies between the Ashley and Cooper rivers with amazing views of the area known as the low country. The history of the city dates back before the American Revolutionary War. Its culture and history have been a strong part of the city, and it's one that you'll want to add to your list of travels in the United States. Here is a list of some recommendations I always tell people that they should check out in the Charleston area.
Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island. This 167-acre tea Plantation still makes their own tea leaves and produces tea on the island. It's a beautiful picturesque place with a beautiful drive from Charleston.
Angel Oak on John's Island. This amazing tree is over 60 feet tall and an amazing canopy. The tree is over 300 to 400 years old.
The Tomato Shed Cafe on John's Island. This is a true farm and sea to table restaurant. The family that owns it has their own farm and shrimping boats. They have amazing crab cakes, squash casserole, tomato pie, and so many other amazing dishes. Plus they offer shopping and to go items.
For a true low country experience, especially if you're into hiking and bird watching head to Bulls Island. It's part of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and lies about an hour north of Charleston. The only way to access the island is by ferry or boat.
Three other notable restaurants to check out are Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan's Island, Wild Olive on John's Island, and Bohemian Bull on James Island.
Charleston is a true amazing place to visit from Fort Sumter, The Market, incredible dining throughout the city, and a city that had identified itself as a top tourist destination. Incredible beaches at Folly, Sullivan's, Isle of Palms, and one of my favorite beaches there is Beachwalker on John's Island next to Kiawah. Best time to visit is from March until June and September until November. Additionally, the area offers great festivities during Fourth of July and Christmas. It also offers great kids experiences with the Aquarium and James Island County Park. Add this destination for your next adventure for fun on the beach with a little bit of everything.
